The
Sheraton Moorea is Located between Cook's Bay and Opohonu Bay, about
20 minutes from the airport. The nearest shops and restaurants are about
10 minutes by car.
The resort is on a relatively small property where the best was made
of the limited space. It is well laid out and built with traditional
materials for a typical Polynesian decor. The resort design or decor
is not particularly original but overall pleasant. You enter through
a small and understated lobby leading to the pool, the restaurant on
the left, and then on to the beach.
Room Features:
Of the 106 bungalows at the resort, 57 are overwater and connected
by wooden walkways. These overwater bungalows offer various views of
the lagoon or the land, and sometimes of the opposite bungalows. Some
tropical sea life can be seen through the small glass floor panel under
the coffee table.
All the bungalows are of an average size and feature teakwood floors
and a medium size but well appointed bathrooms featuring a large opening
into the bedroom. There is a set of wooden louvres to insure some privacy
if desired. You can soak in the claw-footed bathtub while enjoying a
limited view of the lagoon (overwater bungalows only).
In addition to the overwater bungalows, there are beach bungalows, garden
bungalows and family units in the resort's not-yet-lush gardens. All
the bungalows are identical and feature quality furnishings and appointments.
Double connecting bungalows
are also available for larger parties traveling together or for families.
All bungalows include: AM/FM Alarm Clock, Coffee/Tea Maker, Hairdryer,
Iron/Ironing Board, In-Room Safe, Mini Bar, Data Port, Television with
Cable, Air-Conditioning, Direct-Dial Telephones

..We had been scheduled to stay 2 nights at the Pearl Beach but
decided to go on to the Moorea Sheraton. We stayed at the Sheraton 3
years ago after it first opened, and much has improved since then.
The grounds are now beautiful as the gardens have grown and blossomed.
The property has a more Polynesian feel and is located on a lovely beach
surrounded by pristine turquoise water. Unfortunately, at the Sheraton
also, some of the view from the beach is blocked by the overwater bungalows,
but not so much from the area of the bar and restaurant. However, some
of the Beach Bungalows see little more than the overwater bungalows
in front.
Our Horizon Overwater Bungalow looked
out onto the left of the property (best side) over the lagoon as well
as towards the lush hills of Moorea. Swimming and snorkeling here is
lovely in this glorious clear, warm water. The bungalows are average
size but comfortable with a regular size bathroom (ladies.. you will
love the claw footed tub!) sectioned off from the bedroom by a Venetian
blind which can be raised and lowered as desired. There are all the
expected amenities of a 5 star resort (including CD player, iron, etc..).
The deck is comfortable with 2 lounge chairs plus a table and 2 chairs.
We saw many other guest taking their lounge chairs down to the lower
deck close to the water for the better view and the cooling breeze.
There are several areas to dine - a main breakfast/dinner area and 2
outdoor restaurants, one poolside and the other right on the sand lagoonside.
We had lunch here twice and enjoyed the relaxed, mellow atmosphere as
we munched on more sashimi, tuna tartar and Caesar salads accompanied
by ice cold Hinano's. Food was good and priced competitively with the
other restaurants in Moorea.
Room service was also quite good and we
enjoyed it on our terrace the last day.
We had dinner at a couple of restaurants in Moorea, the more memorable
one being Te Ono Iti (Cook's Bay) were we went twice in row and had
2 excellent French meals far better than what we can get in L.A. for
more money. But there are many restaurant options in Moorea, mostly
with good to very good food.
We also went to visit Ron Hall at Island Fashion Black Pearls and lucky
me, I came back with an early Christmas present... :-)
Sadly our stay in Moorea was far too short, but as we always do, we
loved every minute here and certainly look forward to returning soon...

Arrived
at the beautiful Sheraton resort at about 6:45 am and were able to check
into our Superior Garden Bungalow (#35) right away. We were in the first
row of this class of bungalows and on a cul de sac so to speak, so very
little foot traffic, close to the pool / reception and we could see
the lagoon between the beach bungalows (which seemed to have quite a
bit of traffic crossing in front of their lanais). The room was very
nice, loved the bathtub, big enough for two. Definitely order the goose
down pillows from the pillow menu. The shower had glass doors which
closed tight. Thankfully we had a/c as it was quite hot and a bit humid
for us. However, every time you took your keys to leave the room the
a/c turned off (makes sense, but the room heated up quickly). So we
overrode the electrical controls with our United Frequent Flyer card
substituting for the actual control. That way we always came back to
a cool room. That night we were too tired and lazy to go beyond the
hotel for dinner. They had a seafood buffet with a 30-45 minute Polynesian
dance show. Dancing nice, food OK, very convenient.

Our
experience at the Sheraton Moorea was excellent. We were in over-water
bungalow #75, which was on the end of the pier and had a wonderful view
of the ocean as well as of Moorea behind us. We didn't have the "awesome"
sunset view that some of the other bungalows got, but loved the privacy
and were thrilled with our bungalow. The room designs are beautiful
with rich wood and fabrics.
The balcony was most enjoyable and there was great snorkeling right outside
the deck--we didn't need to swim out to a special "spot" to
enjoy the snorkeling--it was perfect around the beach and OW bungalows.
The room was lovely, clean, and spacious. We enjoyed the decor, and
it was in excellent condition including a claw-footed bath tub, and
a bidet. The mini-bar was warm when we arrived, and were disappointed
that they couldn't attend to it right away, but the next day they brought
a new one to our room and quickly swapped it out. The location is away
from most everything, with the exception of a small grocery store within
walking distance, which was great for buying bottled water and snacks
for the room (saved $$).The beach and pool were clean and well kept
and had a beautiful appearance. The service was friendly, warm, and
responsive. The restaurant was good, but not excellent. We enjoyed the
variety of the buffets and the dance shows accompanying them, but often
found the meat and fish overcooked and on the dry side at dinner. The
pastries were superb, and the breakfasts were good. The other thing
we noticed is that during the day, there weren't enough beach chairs
and umbrellas to accommodate all the guests who wanted them. It didn't
matter much to us, since we ended up on our private sun deck over the
water outside of our room, but if we did want to use the pool and have
an umbrella, we'd have to "claim" it by around 10am.
After awhile, the electric carts that the maids and attendants use became
a little annoying, since while walking on the pier, you'd have to step
aside for them to pass almost every time you went to or from your room.
We appreciated the bicycle-driven carts used at the Pearl Beach Resort
on Bora Bora, and think the Sheraton should get rid of the carts.
We appreciated the variety, condition, and quality of water equipment
available from the resort. We used the kayaks regularly, and there were
always enough available to accommodate us. The tennis courts and equipment
were great, and we also appreciated the willingness of the front desk
staff to assist us with anything. They were friendly and courteous and
willing to serve. The other wonderful thing was that upon arriving in
the room, we each found a set of snorkeling gear, and amazingly, one
pair of fins fit my husband, and the other fit me! Equipment and workout
facilities were excellent and clean.
The gardens and landscaping were lovely, and there weren't any mosquitos.
We didn't expect such a lush tropical garden, since the Sheraton is
fairly new, but were surprised with the abundant hibiscus and tiare
growing there.
Excursions: we did the Tiki Village excursion, and the Ray and Shark
feeding with a picnic on a Motu. The Tiki Village was great as far as
seeing authentic traditional dances done by Tahitian women and men that
were "real people" and not dancing super-models, as we saw
on Tahiti. The costumes and fire dances were great. The food was only
OK ...definitely interesting, but not something we were accustomed to.
The whole evening went too long though... we had to tour through the
village broken into groups and were shuffled around to all their exhibits
of wood carving, basket making, etc. and it would have been much nicer
to have that be optional or at least allow us to wander through it at
our leisure for a shorter duration of time. The other excursion we did
was also enjoyable, and we have no negative comments for the shark and
ray feeding trip. We were entertained on our boat ride out of Cooks
Bay by Marcello and his ukulele, stopping for both a snorkel adventure
with shark feeding, and an encounter with the sting rays where we were
able to feed them by hand! Our motu picnic was delicious, and we had
a lot of fun since the people running the tour participated with us
in the snorkeling and barbecuing. It was a perfect activity from start
to finish.

MOOREA: We stayed at the Sheraton. One thing no one mentioned
before is the lack of privacy in the bathroom. The wc was separated
only by what I call swinging saloon style doors.
The snorkeling was GREAT. And you could easily see fish from the walkways
and through the floor. The water was very calm and easy to swim in.
Also, folks have mentioned the cost of the breakfast buffet; you can
order ala carte off a menu. A lot has been said about Alfredos. We liked
it. On Sunday, he has entertainment and the service goes dramatically
down, but the food is still good. My husband recommends the poisson
cru and the coconut-crusted chicken. We also went to Le Cocotier. Very
good, very French.
The Sheraton was beyond words coupled with the surroundings it blew
away the Four Seasons in Paris and was half the price.
The grounds at the Sofitel were by far the best. People rave about the
service at the Beachcomber but it was the least appealing visually to
me. The Bungalows were really lacking.
My wife and I stayed in The OW Horizon #74 it
was great! But #87 was the best OW at the end in the middle. I Like
the Tiki Village, eat before you go the food was not to my liking but
more adventurous types may like it.

...Once we arrived at the Sheraton, we were greeted by the concierge
who gave us some pineapple juice while we waited for him to check us
in. Then we were whisked off to our overwater bungalow...#100. We couldn't
believe it when we walked in...the room was so beautiful! So many have
already described the clawfoot tub, stereo system, etc. so I won't rehash.
Just know that this was one of the Nicest hotel rooms I've ever seen
in my life. The snorkeling off the back deck was amazing. Be sure to bring
an underwater camera. The prettiest fish seem to hang out underneath
the bungalows. We also had an octopus that lived in one of the big pieces
of coral right below our deck. The food was very good here too. It was
much more "American" than the Tahiti Beachcomber. The presentation
is beautiful...be sure to try the desserts too. We kept taking pictures
of our plates b/c they were so beautiful! Also, they offer Cuban cigars
on the dessert menu. My husband was very pleased when he saw that, and
treated himself to a Monte Cristo one night after dinner.
...There are only three beach bungalows at the Sheraton. They
are located right beside the walkway to the overwater bungalows and
they are all right beside each other. Since they are all located so close
to each other, it should not matter which one you get...the view will
be the same from all three. As for the overwater bungalows, try and
get one from #95 to #105 because they are located at the end of the
walkway, the farthest from land. We were in #100 and were very happy
with it. It was also conveniently located right near the ice machine
and the overwater bar. You will be very pleased with the Sheraton. The
overwater bungalows are fabulous. Have fun!
