On
the northwest coast of Moorea, past Opunohu Bay, the Intercontinental Resort and Spa
is about 1/2 hour drive from the ferry landing and the airport of Moorea.
There are a few shops and 1or 2 restaurants within 20 to 30 minute walk.
Seeing the luxuriance and beauty of its garden, It is difficult to imagine
this resort is mostly reclaimed land and a man-made beach. From the main
entrance, a lovely road takes you to the cathedral-like lobby which, with
all its accouterments seems a little overdone for the style of Moorea.
Once you get past the slight pretentiousness of the decor, you will soon
discover the qualities which still make this hotel one of the best in Moorea.
The Intercontinental has 49 air-conditioned rooms and 98 bungalows - 50 are
set over the lagoon and 48 are on the private beach. The bungalows are
scattered amongst the luxuriant vegetation in different areas, along waterways
and on islands linked by walkways. There is a general feeling of intimacy
and seclusion.
For clarification, it should be stated that some of the "beach"
bungalows are not on the main the beach, but bordering a waterway, and that
the "overwater" bungalows are not fully overwater but built
half way on land. Nevertheless, from your "overwater" bungalow
you will have the same view and experience of the lagoon as if you were
farther out. The lagoon is very deep at this location and it was not practical
to build on stilts. Some of the overwater bungalows are in the lagoon
area reserved for the dolphins, and you may enjoy a free dolphin show
when the mood strikes them.
Room Features:
The Lanai Rooms are regular A/C hotel room with a small terrace overlooking
the resort and the lagoon. They are located in a 2 story Polynesian style
building. These rooms are well appointed and offer the same conveniences
as the bungalows.
Each bungalow is spacious with both a bedroom and a sitting room leading
to a small private sun deck.
All bungalows feature radio, hair dryer, air conditioning, ceiling fan, satellite
TV, in house video, coffee & tea facilities, telephone, internet
access, mini bar.
The Fare Nui Restaurant is the main restaurant, while the Fare Hana Restaurant
serves simple, fresh food in a casual poolside setting. After dinner,
you can enjoy local entertainment, including Tahitian music nightly and
folkloric dance shows three times a week.
Facilities and Activities:
Although the sand was brought-in, the private beach is deep and wide and
indistinguishable from a natural beach.
Available:
Tennis , Swimming , Scuba diving and snorkeling , Sailing and parasailing
, Water skiing , Windsurfing , Horseback riding , Glass-bottom boat trips
, Deep-sea fishing , Beach barbecues , Dolphin Quest , Submarine Excursions
Dolphin Experience is located in an area of the lagoon within the resort. Through
an interactive program led by Dolphin Quest's marine mammal experts, you
can experience a more personal encounter with one of our ocean's most
amazing and intelligent creatures. But be aware that these encounters
are very controlled with a limited interaction, and under the close supervision
of a dolphin handler.
Helene's Wellness Spa. This spa offers a vast array of services for your body and soul. There are several modalities of massage, body scrubs, wraps and masks. You may even indulge in an authentic Polynesian tattoo! Everything here from the service to products offered, come from the essence of the word "Natural." There is a reason that ELLE magazine has described Helene Spa as "One of the seven beauty spas of the world."

We left
the next day by Air Tahiti for Moorea and stayed at the Intercontinental in
a Garden Bungalow. It was very nice. They had great service and very nice
accommodations. They gave us very nice gifts as well. We did the Barbeque
and show. They show was wonderful with beautiful women and colorful outfits.
The food was superb.

... I sent an email to the Intercontinental folks telling them the rooms I
would prefer. We got our first choice - beach bungalow 317. If you are
not into snorkeling you cannot go wrong with this room. It has an unobstructed
view of the lagoon and the ocean. You can see sunsets from the patio.
The main beach is close by. In fact right below the patio, another small
beach starts. We saw rays, eel, stonefish and plenty of other fish from
our patio.
* The grounds are kept very neat. You can see over a dozen
varieties of flowers, and plenty of birds around.
* The continental breakfast is really good and one order is enough for
two people. We also ordered some soup and stuff at night and that was
good too.

The Intercontinental was absolutely beautiful and the staff was extremely helpful
in trying to help us with our lost luggage (it didn't arrive until Wednesday,
but didn't dampen our time.) We were in an overwater bungalow that was
away from Dolphin Quest (I recommend requesting that) and it was amazing.
The package we had included a canoe breakfast (more food than we've ever
had) and the shark feeding excursion. We saw 3-4 2-5 foot sharks and thousands
of fish on the tour (one of the coolest things I've ever done.) While
at the Intercon we also did the Dolphin Quest. We did the shallow water
one and felt it was a little better than the deep water because you didn't
have to concentrate on trying to float in the water. Stayed in Moorea
for five incredible nights then went to Bora Bora. A little note is that
Alfredo's Restaurant on Moorea is closed EVERY Monday night (we tried.)

..The hotel was what we expected after reading the reviews on this
website. We're glad we went here first or else we would have been very
disappointed. Got a great O/W bungalow at the end of the property with
an unobstructed view of the sunsets. It was great having all the activities
at the end of the dock. The staff was very friendly and always helpful.
Bring bug spray for the mosquito's, we were prepared and didn't get bit,
but others weren't as fortunate. I don't suggest getting the food plan
here because there were plenty of restaurants on the island. Food was
good for breakfast and lunch, but we always ate out for dinner. I recommend
Alfredo's and ask for wine off the list - it's much better. Would probably
not stay here again if we go back, but would chose the Sheraton - much
newer and modern from what we could see.

.. Moorea, Intercontinental. What a great resort, HUGE, I wish I had a car
to get from my bungalow to the main lobby area. Lots of fish were under
our bungalow here, they have limited over-water so book early. To get to Tahiti you
take a big ship across, half an hour ride. If you get sea-sick, do not
try this route! (Very slow rocking) Take the plane, 5 minutes and same
price. Moorea had a lot of shopping for souvenirs, but you have to rent
a car and cruise around to the little shops. There were some good places
to eat here as well. "The Floating Restaurant" very good. Also the
hotel has v. good food.
Overall it's worth every penny and every bit of jet lag.
