Tikehau

Tikehau, one of the most beautiful atolls in Polynesia, forms an almost unbroken circle 16 miles across, creating a unique ecosystem with the highest preponderance of fish of all the atolls.

This oval shaped atoll some 185 miles to the northwest of Tahiti, about 7 miles north of Rangiroa, has a large pass and a series of islets, the largest of which at the south west of the atoll, half a mile wide, is inhabited.

The charming village of Tuherahera, swathed in flowers, is situated on the south end of this large motu which also has two other villages : Tuheiava, a fishing area with many "fish parks" that supply the markets of Tahiti, and Maiaia on the other large motu on the northeast that is a traditional copra producer. This atoll offers the wonderful opportunity to discover the traditional Tuamotu way of life.

The beauty and abundance of its fauna account for the popularity of scuba diving especially in the Tuheiava pass, where the manta rays' dance alternates with the parade of barracudas, tunas, multicolored coral fish, and the ubiquitous reef sharks.

One of the most beautiful atolls in Polynesia also is home to many bird colonies that have sought refuge in the small islands scattered in the lagoon.

We just got back last night. We stayed for 3 nights and loved it. It is remote, with no night life at all. However, by the time we finished a relaxing dinner in the restaurant we were all pretty tired anyway. The food was really very good, but not a huge selection. I think we just about went through all the fish selections while there. There really are no other choices while you are there.

The weather was perfect. Apparently the lack of mountains in the atolls creates some of the least amount of rain in FP. The scenery was beautiful. The water around the resort was crystal clear, and the reefs around the overwater bungalows were in pristine condition. There were tons of fish, and we even saw baby sharks swimming under our overwater bungalow. We walked by the beach bungalows, and they all looked to have nice views of the water. There was no air conditioning in the regular overwater bungalows, but there was a constant stiff breeze and lots of windows allowing for comfortable sleeping. We really enjoyed diving - we were not prepared for the gray sharks but loved it anyway. GREAT visibility. The lagoon trip was very worthwhile - stingrays, sand sharks, turtles, moray eels, eagle rays, and more all in water you could stand in. The staff was very friendly and helpful!!!

My husband and I walked around the whole motu. A few of the over water bungalows face the coral, but it is just a different landscape. Quite a bit of the motu is covered with this bleached out old coral, some of it is artificially smoothed out, but it requires the hike I mentioned above to really notice it(bring sturdy shoes if this intrigues you as this coral is sharp!). Ask for different rooms in advance if this concerns you. We loved the regular overwater bungalows, even without the access to the water because the fish life was so abundant. We spent a lot of time just hanging over the railing and watching the entertainment right from our private deck. I love being in the water, and I did not miss the inability to snorkel right from our room. It almost felt like maybe this inability helped preserve the reef action somehow.

I was told the lower decks will not be installed on those units by the way, as they would be covered with water a few months out of the year and would be unsafe. I expect part of the bleached out coral would also be covered during this seasonal change.

..Tikehau was a beautiful laid back resort, we did manage to drink them out of corona beer. Food was very good, especially when you realize where the resort is and how everything has to be brought in by boat. Water crystal clear, sounds of the waves on the reef very relaxing. staff good and friendly. some of our party went diving, and said they never saw clearer water anywhere. this place gets my full high recommendation. just plan on relaxing, swimming and snorkeling.. not much else to do. we did go to the village for an afternoon, go and see sumo at the pension just down the beach to the left of the pier. by the way NO BUGS in the overwater bungalow's.
..wish I was back there

Just returned from 5 days at Tikehau Pearl Beach. Location incredible, food great, service great, and diving out of this world. I feel beach bungalows better than regular OW here because OW have no direct access to water, you have to walk over to beach to wade out into the crystal clear waters, and quite a few OW look out at a rocky waste land area instead of lagoon. It is not pretty compared to facing towards the lagoon. It reminded me of the salt flats in Death Valley.  You see waves break on reef in distance but if I had one of these rooms for the same money as other side I would ask to be moved as soon as one is available on the other side. The OverWater Suites are in a different area, off the beach and have access to the water.  They are larger and better appointed. I think they are worth the extra cost. All the beach bungalows face lagoon. It is very quiet and remote so go there if you want to get away from it ALL and relax.
